Holiday Hiring Season Is Upon Us!

2018 Holiday Hiring and Sales Predictions

Retail sales are expected to grow between 5 and 5.6 percent from a year ago, according to Deloitte’s annual forecast for the holiday season.  For comparison, sales between November of last year and January 2018 climbed 5 percent, totaling $1.05 trillion, according to data from the U.S. Commerce Department. This year, Deloitte says holiday retail sales could top $1.10 trillion.  While online retail seems to be taking over, there’s a new condition this year that could send more holiday sales to brick-and-mortar retailers. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in South Dakota v. Wayfair that states could require online retailers to collect and remit sales tax. Many states will likely begin to require those collections by the end of the year. As more states follow suit, large-scale online retailers will have to grapple with state-by-state policies and higher prices this holiday shopping season which may lead to more in store sales.
