Three questions before a background check

A quick pre-flight to reduce rework and keep your screening program defensible.

1) What decision will this support?

Be explicit: hiring, promotion, retention, access to sensitive systems, driving roles, etc. The decision should determine the scope.

2) What is job‑relevant?

Define the risk profile for the role and align checks accordingly. Over‑scoping increases cost, friction, and candidate confusion.

3) How will you handle exceptions?

Define criteria and routing up front: what triggers review, who reviews, and what notices are required if you consider adverse action.
